Clarence Winder Giles, 86, our most loved and respected dad and grandpa, passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family June 7, 2002.
He was born March 12, 1916 in Salt Lake City, UT to James Joseph and Florence Louella Winder Giles. On Sept 6, 1939, Clarence married Clarissa Nielsen in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Clarissa preceded him in death Sept 20, 1993.
Clarence worked as Production Control Chief at the Tooele Army Depot. He was a Veteran of World War II and a Patriot extraordinaire. He was the inaugural president of the Jordan River Temple Chapter of the SUP; and, with his wife, served a mission to Lark, UT. Clarence loved horseshoe pitching and was Horseshoe Pitching State Champion of Utah eight times, one time as doubles champion. He also served as Water Master for the South end of the Utah/Salt Lake Canal.
Survivors: children, Mary Lou G. Mangum (Larry), Allen R. Giles (Linda), all Riverton; 11 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren, with one due anytime; and five great great-grandchildren, with two on the way. Preceded in death by a son, Jim "Big Red;" and a brother, Rex.
Services Tues. June 11, 2002, 11 a.m., Riverton LDS Stake Center, 1850 W. 13400 S. Friends may call at Goff Mortuary, 8090 S. State St, Midvale, Mon. 6-8 p.m. or Tues. at the church 9:45-10:45 a.m. Interment, South Jordan City Cemetery with military honors. Please bring a note of your favorite memory of Dad for our Book of Memories.
